Stadium continuing at full speed The Ölüdeniz Municipality is carrying out its work in all aspects to become a trademark. Being one of the most popular tourism areas in our country, Ölüdeniz instigated work recently to provide fresh water. At the same time, efforts are been made to finish the widening of the Fethiye-Ölüdeniz road by the forthcoming season. Furthermore, construction was started on a football field and two training fields on the land on the Babadag road, planned as a sports centre by the Municipality
Keramettin Yýlmaz, the Mayor of Ölüdeniz, furnished the following information in this regard: “We are trying to take care of all the deficiencies in our region eventually. Work on fresh water supply and the road construction is continuing. At the same time we have noted that we lack a sports complex in the area and started to work on this. The construction is going on at full speed. We have developed a project on the land of 40 thousand square meters on the way to Babadað, behind the Oran Apart Hotel, belonging to our municipality, for the construction of a normal size football field and two training fields with stands. The fields will be constructed on 27 thousand square meters and the rest will be allocated to social facilities and the stands. I personally think that all the communities in Fethiye must build such establishments. Because we all know what a significant role sports, especially football, plays in the field of tourism in Antalya, especially during the holiday season. Fethiye quietens down during the winter which could be livened up with the presence of such establishments.”

Invitations for bids were sent for the tea garden and the park with the nomadic tent at the Þad headland in Çalýþ Beach, owned by the Municipality .The bids of the five participating companies were evaluated at the Municipal Council Hall. The auction was started with the estimated monthly rent of 1.750 YTL where final bidders were Deniz Yalýnýz and Kutlay Seke. In the end , Metro Construction and Kutlay Seke bid 20 thousand YTL per month and won the contract. The tea garden and the park at Çalýþ beach will be operated by Metro Construction for 3 years with an annual rent of 240 thousand YTL.

Foreign Investors to Get Citizenship Friday, 05 May 2006 In a move to attract more foreign investment the Government is about to change the law to allow foreign investors to become Turkish citizens. The act adapts the current citizenship system to the European Citizenship Agreement of March 1 2000. It will take away the requirement for investors to carry out millitary service as well as the need to buy a residence visa.
The current law requires foreigners to have lived in Turkey for at least 5 years, pass a tough Turkish language test as well as meeting other requirements.
We will wait to see the details of the new law and how it may apply to our readers.

World record attempt plan for Fethiye 40,000 Monday, 15 May 2006 A world record attempt is planned in Fethiye on 1 August. The object of the attempt is to form the biggest love chain in the world. The chain will be formed with the participants of people living in Fethiye and the tourists visiting the region at the time.
The ‘Message of Love’ is aimed at mankind in order to make a contribution to ‘peace in the world’. The people responsible for organising the undertaking are Turker Inanoglu, owner of ‘Mr. Cinema’ and theatre artist and film actor Baykal Kent, as well as civil community foundations and local government administration. In his statement regarding the matter Baykal Kent explained that their object is to get into the Guinness Book of Records by forming a love chain with 40 thousand people holding hands together. Kent also stated that one end of the love chain will start in Kayakoy and the other end will finish in Calis Beach.
Kent says that they have contacted the Minister of Tourism and Culture Atilla Koc, Mugla Governor Mustafa Temel Kocaklar, Fethiye Governor Hasan Karakas, Fethiye Mayor Behcet Saatci, Oludeniz Mayor Keramettin Yilmaz, Guinness Record Book Turkey Representative Prof. Dr. Orhan Kural to elicit their support. Baykal Kent went on to say ‘‘Fethiye is an international tourism center. We aim to make a contribution to peace in the world by forming a love chain. With this project Fethiye will also be on the agenda of the world in friendship and peace matters. Korea entered the Guinness Record Book with a love chain formed by 13 thousand people in 2004. This record is planned to be beaten with 40 thousand people in Fethiye.’’

Tourist Arrivals at Antalya Airport down 19% International arrivals at Antalya Airport so far this year has reached 1,226,797 – a drop of 19 % on the figure recorded for the same time last year.
During the first fourteen days of May, there were 264,742 arrivals at Antalya Airport international terminal. This brought the total number of international arrivals at Antalya Airport to 1,226,797 this year. Last Saturday and Sunday combined, there a total of 55,024 arrivals passed through Antalya's International terminal.
Antalya Airport had welcomed a record total of 7,264,896 international arrivals in 2005 – the first year ever the seven-million mark for international arrivals was exceeded.
The resort city of Antalya on Turkey's Mediterranean southern coast is at the centre of Turkey's main tourism region, attracting in particular German and Russian visitors. Tourism revenues are extremely important to the Turkish economy, especially as a counterbalance to the country's widening current account deficit. Various factors have been cited in explanation of the drop in tourist numbers visiting Turkey so far in 2006 - the controversy surrounding the publication of the cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in the Western media, the killing of an Italian Catholic priest in the Turkish Black Sea city of Trabzon in February and increased competition in other countries.

Prime Minister Visits The Area Monday, 25 September 2006 Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Mugla on the 8th September to offically open the new Dalaman Airport International Terminal, the recently completed Gocek tunnel and the Gulluk harbour project in Bodrum.
The Prime Minister had a busy day ahead of him as he flew from Ankara into Dalaman airport to attend the official 11am opening ceremony of the International Terminal at Dalaman airport, which was recently completed at a cost of 160 million dollars. After the Dalaman ceremony he left the airport and travelled in his personal coach along roads lined with hundreds of supporters and well-wishers to another official opening ceremony at the entrance to the nearby Gocek tunnel, which has finally been completed 48 years after the project was tabled by Adnan Menderes. Returning to Dalaman around 4pm Erdogan then flew to Bodrum to open Gulluk harbour. At each ceremony he was greeted by enormous crowds of supporters waving banners and flags.
The Prime Minister returned by air back to Ankara at the end of the day. Although each of the projects had recently been completed and were already 'open for business' the offical opening ceremonies had been held-over awaiting a suitable date in the PM’s diary for him to personally attend the formal openings

Catch of the day Wednesday, 20 September 2006 A shark weighing in at 1 tonne and measuring three metres in length has been caught in Bodrum Karaada. Fishermen on the 22 metre fishing boat ‘Alize’ traveling from Mersin to Bodrum managed to catch the giant shark in their net. It was taken to Izmir for sale. Regular readers of 'The Post' will recall that they have reported no less than five incidents of large sharks being caught in the Mediterranean and Aegean waters between Bodrum and Fethiye during the last 10 months. All the catches were well documented and photographed and it’s a fair bet that many more shark catches in these waters have gone unreported. In fact there are approximately 46 different species of sharks in the Mediterranean - 16 of them measuring three or more metres in length, so the occasional encounter between humans and these animals in the one of the world’s most frequented and most travelled seas is unavoidable. Although the Mediterranean/Aegean barely makes up 0.7% of the world's total water surface, the amount of people seeking rest and relaxation there, in addition to those seeking to make a living, is enormous and in no way compares to its relative geographical surface area. According to MEDSAF (Mediterranean Shark Attack File) maintained by Ian Fergusson CBiol MIBiol who is a member of the IUCN (World Conservation Union) Shark Specialist Group (Mediterranean Region) during the period from 1890-2003 (113 years) there has only been one shark attack in Turkish waters and that was back in 1930 in the Bosphorus and was non-fatal. Leading artist on show in Marmaris Monday, 25 September 2006 Marmaris is set to host one Turkey’s leading painters. Ahmet Yesil, who has won world wide acclaim and dozens of awards for his work, will be exhibiting at the Grand Azur Hotel between 23rd September and 1st October. The exhibition is free. Ahmet Yesil was born in Mersin in 1954, where he had his primary and high school education. He lost his ability to walk after a footballing accident in 1972. Painter Nuri Abaç and Ilhan Çevik encouraged him in art. He had his drawing and painting education from these artists. Deciding to follow a path in art he chose painting as his lifestyle. Working non-stop in his studio in Mersin, he attended numerous personal, joint and contesting exhibitions in many cities. Meanwhile, because of his love and interest in the city, he made a special serial study of the old houses in Mersin in 1988. His works can be seen at the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Finance, General Management of the Turkish Monopoly, General Managements of Ziraat Bank, Akbank, Sekerbank, and Vakifbank. Other examples of Yesil’s works are displayed at the offices of the National Lottery, D.Y.O. Museum of Educational Foundation, Ankara Paintings and Sculpture Museum, Museum of the Municipality of Körfez (Izmir Gulf) and Istanbul Ramko Art Center. There are special collections of Yesil's works in the cities of Adana, Antalya, Ordu and Mersin and his work is also displayed overseas in Germany, United States of America, Canada, England, and several other countries. He is a member of the Istanbul Association of Artists, Ankara Association of United Artists-Sculptors, and Içel Art Club.
