Turkey tops the summer rush
Tour operators are reporting a surge in bookings for summer holidays to the eastern Mediterranean country.
Turkey is not just for Christmas — it’s for our summer holidays too, according to tour operators who say that there has been a rush on sales for trips to the eastern Mediterranean country this summer.
Thomson says that Turkey has been by far its best seller in the January rush to book summer breaks. “It’s winning hands down,” said James Watts, a spokesman for the company.
Thomson increased its capacity to Turkey after a successful year in 2005 that had 1,859,762 visitors to the country, 27 per cent more than 2004, with much of the growth due to First Choice and Thomas Cook expansion.
Nick Wrightman, managing director of Tapestry, a Turkey specialist, says that 35 per cent of his holidays are already sold compared with 20 per cent at this time last year.
He said: “We have some lovely villas. We’re trying to focus on the better stuff — refining what we offer. Turkey’s popular but there’s still plenty out there.” Kaya, the ancient village at the centre of Louis de Bernières’ novel Birds Without Wings, has proved particularly popular, he said.
A recent Mintel report found that people rated very highly the “value-for-money” of Turkey, with “guaranteed good weather” and “history and culture” also mentioned as important.
A spokeswoman for the tourist board said that the bird flu cases reported this week were “2,000km (1,250 miles) from the resorts.”
