Cheaper than chips?

For those of you considering living here permanently, I thought I would run through some of the costs involved. I live by myself with my dog in a three storey Triplex with air-conditioning. I use the air-con regularly all year round for both cooling off and heating the house during the winter. Its worth pointing out though, I do not live in a highly touristy area, and know that in Koycegiz food & drink items are sometimes substantially cheaper than in Marmaris, Fethiye etc

Utility Bills

Water bill 17.00 ytl for 2 months (6.80p)
Electricy 58.00 ytl for 2 months (23.00p)
Council Tax, around 15 ytl per tapu, per 6 months (6.00p)

Phone bill 7.00 ytl (line rental charge per month) (3.00p)
Digiturk Sat TV 29.10 ytl per month (basic package) (12.00p)

Food & Drink

1 Kilo potatoes 0.50 Ytl (20p)
1 kilo mushrooms 4.00 ytl (1.80p)
1 kilo chicken 6.00 ytl (2.40p)
1 kilo fillet steak 18.00 ytl (7.20p)
1 kilo mince meat 12.00 ytl (4.80)
Bread 0.25 ytl (10p)

White wine (Dolca) 7-8.00 ytl (3.00p)
White wine (Kavak) 8-9.00 ytl (3.40p)
White wine (Cankaya) 10-12 ytl (4.40p)
Beer 1.20 ytl (50p)
Brandy (bottle) 34.00 ytl (13.80p)

The prices above are what you can find in most supermarkets, they do vary from market to market, so its worth shopping around. As you can see, prices are a great deal cheaper than in the uk.

I usually work on the basis that the excange rate is around 2.50 ytl to the pound, although it goes up and down daily. To work out the money quickly when shopping and to help with the denominations of notes and coins, I use this as a guide;

0.50 kurus - 20p
1 tl - 40p
5 tl - 2.00p
10 tl - 4.00p
20 tl - 8.00p
50 tl - 20.00p
100 tl - 40.00p
250 tl - 100.00p
500 tl - 200.00p
1000 tl - 400.00p

and so on...........

Thanks for that info Sarah. My husband since our last visit to Icmeler has not stopped going on about us retiring there, I am more up for it now after seeing your figures for food etc. so much cheaper that here and the food tastes so much better too.

Cheaper than water is a line the use alot in the Toerist area's in Turkey and in some cases its true, couldnt believe all the things i could buy when i was in Turkey, and still had money left when i went home!!!

SARAH...what is the situation re: independent hotels/apartments(price) if any of us want to give Koycegiz a try?? nice to know that the location is not to far from the airport..also taxi price from Dalaman.. how far to the mud baths ,rock tombs & turtle beach from you... i've been a few times and loved it there (DALYAN) but was told that due to the river it can get a little uncomfortable with mossies when the sun goes down..Good selection of riverside restaurants though. xx

Hotels cost about 60 YTL per room and that usually includes breakfast, but there are pensions here toowhich tend to be a bit cheaper and are about 40 YTL per night for two people.

Taxi's I believe are around 70 - 80 YTL from the airport to here.

You can get to Dalyan and the mudbaths etc. by boat (15ytl with bbq lunch) sailing across the lake, which is lovely. It takes about and hour, but you can also get there by dolmus, taxi etc.

And as for mossies, yes they are bad in Dalyan as there is lots of standing water, but here in Koycegiz we really don't have much of a problem with them.

Also 'cheaper than Netto' and 'cheaper than Asda price' coupled with a slap of their bottom ;D

Oh the memories of going to Fetiye (sorry wrong spelling) market and the sounds of 'cheaper than Asda' and they even had the bright green fleeces of Asda uniform displayed. One cheeky chappie shouted to me 'you try and you will buy' but I don't really know why I would want to buy Asda uniform as I don't work for them? It still makes me laugh to this day. Also we heard 'luvly jubly' loads of times. Don't we just love the Turkish?
